Screendance, oft auch Videodance oder Cinedance genannt, ist mittlerweile eine weltweit boomende, eigenständige Kunstform, die jedoch in Deutschland weitestgehend unbekannt ist. Sie arbeitet interdisziplinär im besten Sinne und kombiniert Tanz (meist modernen und zeitgenössischen Tanz), Choreografie, Performance, Film und Bildende Kunst. Grundsätzlich geht es im Screendance immer um die Frage nach der Fruchtbarmachung und Bereicherung der Techniken einer Kunstform für die jeweils anderen.
Die Tanzsparte des Theater Freiburg widmet sich seit der Spielzeit 2017/2018 aktiv der Verbreitung der höchst international agierende Kunstform Screendance und hat es sich zum Ziel erklärt, sie nicht nur in Freiburg und dem Bundesland, sondern auch im Dreiländereck und in ganz Deutschland weiter zu festigen. Regelmäßig werden Workshops mit verschiedenen thematischen Schwerpunkten im Hinblick auf Screendance angeboten und es wurde das INTERNATIONAL SCREENDANCE FESTIVAL FREIBURG ins Leben gerufen.
Screendance, often also called videodance or cinedance, is now an independent art form that is booming worldwide, but is largely unknown in Germany. It works interdisciplinarily in the best sense and combines dance (mostly modern and contemporary dance), choreography, performance, film and visual arts. Basically, screendance is always about the question of making the techniques of one art form fruitful and enriching them for the others.
Since the season 2017/2018, the dance department of Theater Freiburg has been actively dedicated to spreading the highly international art form of screendance and has set itself the goal of further consolidating it not only in Freiburg and the state, but also in the border triangle and throughout Germany. Workshops with different thematic focuses with regard to screendance are regularly offered and the INTERNATIONAL SCREENDANCE FESTIVAL FREIBURG has been launched.

Marisa C. Hayes & Franck Boulègue
Seit der Spielzeit 2017/2018 ist die Tanzsparte mit Marisa C. Hayes und Franck Boulègue verbunden. Sie sind international anerkannte Pädagog_innen, Künstler_innen und Wissenschaftler_innen des Screendance. Ihre eigenen Arbeiten im Bereich Screendance wurden vom New Yorker Dance on Camera Festival und von Pentacle Movement Media ausgezeichnet und im Fernsehen (France 3) und auf internationalen Filmfestivals und in Theatern gezeigt. Ihre Forschungen und Texte zum Thema Screendance wurden in Büchern veröffentlicht (The Oxford Handbook of Screendance Studies, Art in Motion: Current Research in Screendance), in Forschungszeitschriften (The International Journal of Screendance, Society of Dance History Scholars) und auf internationalen Konferenzen vorgestellt. Sie sind Mitbegründer_innen und Leiter_innen des Festival International de Vidéo Danse de Bourgogne (Frankreich), einer jährlich stattfindenden Screendanceplattform.
Since the 2017/2018 season, the dance department has been in close collaboration with Marisa C. Hayes and Franck Boulègue. They are internationally recognized teachers, artists and scientists of Screendance. Their own work in the field of Screendance has been awarded by the New York Dance on Camera Festival and Pentacle Movement Media and has been shown on television (France 3) and at international film festivals and theaters. Their research and texts on screendance have been published in books (The Oxford Handbook of Screendance Studies, Art in Motion: Current Research in Screendance), research journals (The International Journal of Screendance, Society of Dance History Scholars) and presented at international conferences. They are co-founders and directors of the Festival International de Vidéo Danse de Bourgogne (France), an annual screen dance platform.
Screendance Workshop Online
Seit Juli 2020 bietet die Tanzsparte des Theater Freiburg in unregelmäßigen Abständen den einführenden Screendance Workshop Online an. Dieser Workshop bietet einen Überblick über die Geschichte und Praxis des Screendance. Er findet online statt und beinhaltet geführte Übungen, Diskussionen und Vorführungen. Der Schwerpunkt liegt auf der Erstellung von Choreografien für und mit der Kamera, da diese zu einer Verlängerung des tanzenden Körpers wird. Wie Choreografien für die Kamera erstellt und gefilmt werden, lernen Sie ganz einfach mit ihren Smartphone- oder Webkameras zu Hause oder in Ihrem Garten. Der Workshop wird von Marisa C. Hayes und Franck Boulègue geleitet.
Aufbauend auf diesen einführenden Workshop können die Teilnehmer_innen am "going further"-Workshop teilnehmen und darin ihr Wissen und ihre Praxis zu Screendance vertiefen. Der Workshop funktioniert dann wie ein kreatives Laboratorium, in dem jeder Teilnehmende einen kurzen Experimentalfilm seiner eigenen Wahl gestaltet. Gemeinsam werden Choreografie- und Kameramethoden entwickelt, die sich an die Bedürfnisse jedes Projekts anpassen. Am Ende werden die Teilnehmenden eine kurze Studie zur Unterstützung eines größeren Projekts oder einen einminütigen Screendancefilm erstellt haben.
Since July 2020 the Dance Departement of Theater Freiburg irregularly offers an introductory Screendance Workshop Online. This short introduction to screendance will provide an overview of the history and practice of screendance, or dance filmmaking, taught entirely online through guided exercises, discussions, and viewing. The focus will be on generating choreography for the camera and with the camera – as the camera becomes an extension of the dancing body. The fundamentals of how we create choreography for the camera and film it will be presented through exercises that focus on adapting basic technology (smart phone cameras, web cameras, etc.) to site-specific practices at home or in your garden. Solo filmmaking strategies will be explored and adapted for those staying at home or working alone. The guided exercises given in the workshop will create micro films that can be shared. The workshop facilitators encourage all participants to explore their own creative styles of movement and images by providing the practical and conceptual tools to create compelling moving image compositions.
People who took part in the introductory workshop and would like to deepen their knowledge and practice of the screendance introductory exercises can move along with the "going further"-workshop. This workshop will function like a creative laboratory setting in which each participant begins to design a short experimental film of their own choosing. You will develop choreographic and camera methods that adapt to the needs of each project. By the end, participants will have created a short study in support of a larger project or a completed 1-minute-film.
