Wenn der Bühnentanz dem sich bewegenden menschlichen Körper alles verdankt, stellt sich die Frage, was im Kontext von Screendance passiert. Welche Entitäten beobachten wir auf unseren Bildschirmen? Im Film gefangene 2D-Körper, zum ewigen Wiederholen der gleichen Bewegungssequenz verdammt? Unsere Bildschirme werden von Phantomen sich bewegender Körper heimgesucht.

If stage dance owes everything to human bodies in motion, one wonders what happens in the context of screendance. What are the entities we watch on our screens? 2D bodies trapped in their film, doomed to the eternal recurrence of the same sequence of motions? Our screens are haunted by the spectres of bodies in movement.

Die hybride Praxis des Screendance kann mit vielen Kunstformen, künstlerischen Bewegungen und technologischen Entwicklungen verknüpft werden. Wie gehen wir in diesem Zusammenhang mit der Geschichte dieses Formats um? Wo beginnt Screendance und welche Rolle spielt er? Dieser Vortrag untersucht die Pluralität und die Unbestimmtheit des Screendance und macht sich stark für die daraus resultierende Potentialität einer dynamischen und sich ständig verändernden Forschung und Kunstproduktion.

The hybrid practice of screendance can be linked to many art forms, artistic movements, and technological developments. How do we approach discussing the history of screendance in this framework? Where does screendance begin and does it matter? This presentation proposes to examine the plurality of screendance and its indefiniteness as a strength for developing a dynamic and ever-changing form of research and creation.

Die tiefgreifenden Auswirkungen sozialer Isolation und zerrütteter sozialer Strukturen auf das Wohlbefinden des Einzelnen, rücken zunehmend in unser Blickfeld. Auch in Debatten zu Umwelt und Nachhaltigkeit stehen „konstruktive Gemeinschaften“ zunehmend im Vordergrund. Welche Auswirkungen haben Screen-basierte Darstellungen, Screen-Performances und Screendance auf heutige Gemeinschaften und was trägt Screendance zu diesen Debatten bei? Die Arbeiten von Meredith Monk, insbesondere ihr Film ELLIS ISLAND (Rosen und Monk, 1982) wird als Beispiel dienen, um zu untersuchen, welchen Raum und welche Zeit verschiedene Kameraeinstellungen schaffen können und wie so Gemeinschaften, Kommunalitäten und kommunale Unterschiede durch Screendance untersucht werden.

There is an increasing realization of the profound impact of social isolation and broken social structures on individual well-being. Notions of constructive communities are at the forefront also of debates on environmental sustainability. How does screendance reflect on contemporary communities, and what is it contributing to these debates? I will look at the work of Meredith Monk, in particular her film ELLIS ISLAND (Rosen and Monk, 1982), to discuss the kind of space and time the camera proposes, and the kinds of communities, communalities and communal differences it explores.

In diesem Vortrag werden die verschiedenen Interaktionen zwischen dem bewegten Körper, der Choreographie, der Kamerabewegung und dem Schnitt im Screendance in ausgewählten Arbeiten des ersten INTERNATIONAL SCREENDANCE FESTIVAL FREIBURG analysiert. So wird ein Einblick in die wichtigsten Strategien im Konzeptionieren und Filmen von Screendances gewährt.

This lecture analyzes different interactions between the moving body, the choreography, the camera movement and the editing in screendance, using works selected at the INTERNATIONAL SCREENDANCE FESTIVAL FREIBURG as examples. This will provide an introduction to the main strategies used when conceiving and filming screendance works.

Am letzten Abend des INTERNATIONAL SCREENDANCE FESTIVAL FREIBURG werden die Gewinner_innen des NEWCOMERAS PREISES und des PUBLIKUMSPREISES gekürt. Nach der Preisverleihung werden die sechs Gewinner-Filme noch einmal gezeigt.

On the last evening of the INTERNATIONAL SCREENDANCE FESTIVAL FREIBURG the winners of the NEWCOMERAS PRIZE and THE AUDIENCE PRIZE will be chosen. After the award ceremony, the six winning films will be presented in a second screening.

Dieser 2-tägige Workshop richtet sich an Jugendliche im Alter von 15 bis 19 Jahren, die Interesse daran haben mehr über Screendance  und somit die kreative Arbeit mit Kamera und Tanz kennenzulernen. Mit Hilfe audiovisueller Mittel wird gemeinsam eine Choreographie speziell für die Leinwand entwickelt. Technische oder tänzerische Vorkenntnisse sind bei diesem Workshop keine Voraussetzung. Da auch Screendance eine hybride Kunstform ist, ist jeder willkommen, der sich für Tanz, Choreografie, Film oder Bildende Kunst interessiert. Jedoch sollten die Teilnehmenden Offenheit und die Bereitschaft sich mit anderen zu bewegen mitbringen. Es wird mit einfachen Mitteln wie Handykameras und Laptops gearbeitet, um zu zeigen, wie diese alltäglichen Werkzeuge durch kreatives Denken und Choreographie verändert werden können und so eine neue Form von Bewegung und Tanz entsteht. Solo-, Duo- und Gruppenübungen ermöglichen es, Selbstvertrauen im Umgang mit der Kamera zu gewinnen. Außerdem lernen die Teilnehmenden die verschiedenen Möglichkeiten kennen, wie Choreographien für die Kamera erstellt und gefilmt werden können. Alle Teilnehmenden des Workshops erhalten am Ende ein Zertifikat. Die Ergebnisse des Workshops werden an einem der Festivaltage präsentiert.


This 2-day workshop is aimed at young people between the ages of 15 and 19 who are interested in learning more about screendance and the creative work of camera and dance. With the help of audiovisual means a choreography especially for the screen will be developed. Technical or dance skills are not required for this workshop. Since screendance is also a hybrid art form, everyone is welcome who is interested in dance, choreography, film or fine arts. However, participants should be open-minded and willing to move with others. Simple tools such as mobile phone cameras and laptops will be used to show how these everyday tools can be changed through creative thinking and choreography and with that create a new form of movement and dance. Solo, duo and group exercises help to gain self-confidence in the use of the camera. Participants will also learn how to create and film choreographies for the camera. All workshop participants will receive a certificate at the end and the results of the workshop will be presented at one of the festival days.

2-tägiger Workshop für Künstler_innen und Filmemacher_innen aller Disziplinen. Allen Teilnehmenden werden konzeptionelle und praktische Mittel an die Hand zu geben, um eigene Screendances zu entwickeln und mit anderen zu teilen. Der Workshop ist eine intensive spielerisch-praktische Erfahrung, die sowohl Einzel- als auch Gruppenübungen umfasst: zu Kamerabewegung, zum Kreieren von Choreografien für die Kamera und zu Grundkenntnissen im Schnitt. Begleitet wird diese praktische Arbeit von historischen und zeitgenössischen Tanzfilm-Beispielen sowie einem Einblick in Förder- und Screening-Möglichkeiten von Screendance-Filmen. Alle Übungen, auch das Filmen und Schneiden, sind eingebettet in choreografisches Denken und Tun. So haben alle die Möglichkeit zu tanzen, zu filmen und zu schneiden. Die Ergebnisse des Workshops werden im Rahmen des INTERNATIONAL SCREENDANCE FESTIVALS FREIBURG  an einem der Festivaltage präsentiert.

This 2-day workshop is for dancers, artists, filmmakers, and all interested in the art of screendance. All participants will be given conceptual and practical means to develop and share their own screendances (video dance, dance videos, dance films). The workshop is an intensive playful and practical experience that includes both working individually and in groups: on camera movement, on creating choreographies for the camera, and on basic editing skills. This practical work will be accompanied by historical and contemporary dance film examples, as well as an insight into the funding and screening possibilities of screen dance films.  This workshop gives everyone the opportunity to dance, film, and edit. The results of the workshop will be presented at the INTERNATIONAL SCREENDANCE FESTIVAL FREIBURG on one of the festival days.
