The Dance Department of Theater Freiburg offers various residencies for dance professionals based in Germany. A residency includes the use of the theater’s dance studio for a maximum period of 10 days and a production budget of 3.500 €. The aim is to offer an environment in which artists can deepen their research processes and devote themselves fully to their current artistic projects.
Between March and July 2025 three different dance residencies will be awarded:
1) RESIDENCY FOR CONTEMPORARY DANCE FOR CHOREOGRAPHERS FROM FREIBURG AND THE SURROUNDING AREA
Period: Tue, 04.03 - Fri, 14.03.2025
Requirements:
- Group work for min. 2 persons or more, no solo works
- Applicants must be resident in Freiburg or the surrounding area
- Applicants must currently be professionally active and have already presented at least 2 productions between 40-50 minutes at a theatre or in a professional setting
- Presence in Freiburg during the entire residency period
- Application deadline: Tue, 31.12.2024
- Announcement of the selection: Mid-January 2025
2) RESIDENCY FOR HIP HOP & CLUB DANCE FOR CHOREOGRAPHERS FROM BADEN-WÜRTTEMBERG
Period: Tue, 10.06 - Fri, 20.6.2025
Requirements:
- Group work for min. 2 persons or more, no solo works
- Applicants must be resident in Baden-Württemberg
- Applicants must be currently working professionally
- Presence in Freiburg during the entire residency period
- Application deadline: Tue, 31.12.2024
- Announcement of the decision: Mid-February 2025
3) RESIDENCY FOR CONTEMPORARY DANCE FOR CHOREOGRAPHERS FROM GERMANY
Period: Tue, 01.07. - Thu, 10.7.2025
Requirements:
- Group work for min. 2 persons or more, no solo works
- Applicants must be resident in Germany
- Applicants must be currently working professionally and have already presented at least 2 production between 40-50 minutes at a theatre or in a professional setting
- Presence in Freiburg during the entire residency period
- Application deadline: Tue, 31.12.2024
- Announcement of the decision: Mid February 2025
A residency includes the following:
- Use of the dance studio of Theater Freiburg (240m² studio with sprung floor, sound system, grey dance floor, large windows, possibility to darken, mirrors, several ballet barres)
- A production budget of 3.500 €
- A public presentation in a format and setting of free choice (e.g. showing / workshop / discussion). All ideas are welcome, the residents decide for themselves.
Important notes:
- The budget is paid out as a lump sum.
- No further costs, e.g. for travelling, accommodation or insurance, will be covered.
- No technical support can be provided.
Like many cultural venues, Theater Freiburg endeavours to make access as barrier-free as possible. Also our dance residencies are meant to be as barrier-free as possible, so be welcome to send us an access rider if you have one. Together we will clarify individual needs and see what is possible. The dance studio of Theater Freiburg is barrier-free and there is also a barrier-free shower/toilet on the same floor.
The Dance Department of Theater Freiburg selects the residencies according to the following criteria:
- artistic quality and vision
- thematic relevance
- feasibility of the project on the premises of Theater Freiburg
Application documents (in German or English):
- Short letter of motivation or alternatively a link to a short introduction video (max. 2 minutes)
- Short project outline (max. 1 page) including information about the whole team of the residency
- Short concept for the public presentation during the residency with information on what kind of exchange would be beneficial for the artistic process (e.g. Who do you want feedback from? How do you want to reach them? Who is your project for?
- CV + video links to past works
- Information on the exact desired dates and duration (max. 10 days) of the residency in the specified period + information on the planned premiere of the piece that will be developed during the residency
